HANDEL’S MASTERPIECE BETWEEN BAROQUE GRANDEUR AND CULTURAL DIALOGUE

On June 30, 2026, the Royal Opera of Versailles will host a concert performance of Tamerlano by George Frideric Handel, presented at the initiative of the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation. This exceptional evening will bring one of Handel’s great operatic masterpieces to one of Europe’s most prestigious historical stages, in a dialogue between Baroque heritage, contemporary interpretation and Central Asian cultural presence.
Composed in 1724, Tamerlano is considered one of the major works of Handel’s operatic repertoire. Written with remarkable intensity, the opera is admired for its dramatic architecture, its psychological depth and the demands it places on its singers. Through its exploration of power, love, destiny and moral choice, the work continues to speak to contemporary audiences with surprising force.
Inspired by the figure of Amir Temur, known in the West as Tamerlane, the opera stages a world of political tension and intimate conflict. Behind the grandeur of empire lies a human drama shaped by pride, loyalty, desire and suffering. This duality between historical power and private emotion gives Tamerlano its timeless resonance.
For its presentation in Versailles, the work will be performed as a fully realised concert version, allowing the musical dimension of the opera to stand at the centre of the experience. Without the distraction of a traditional staged production, the audience is invited to enter the inner world of the score: the force of the orchestra, the emotional architecture of the voices and the dramatic intensity carried by the choral and vocal writing.
The musical concept, conceived by Kirill Richter, offers a fresh interpretation of Handel’s universe. Rooted in Baroque aesthetics yet open to contemporary sensibilities, this vision remains faithful to the spirit of the original score while subtly extending its expressive possibilities. The result promises to be a performance where tradition is not simply preserved, but reawakened.
The cast brings together internationally recognised voices and major artistic forces from Uzbekistan. Zhenisbek Piyazov will perform the title role of Tamerlane, while Spanish tenor Juan Sancho will appear as Bayezid and Argentine soprano Veronica Cangemi as Asteria. They will be joined by the National Symphony Orchestra of Uzbekistan, conducted by Alibek Kabdurakhmanov, and the Honored Choir of the Republic of Uzbekistan, under the direction of Gulnara Malikova.
This presentation follows the project’s acclaimed premiere at the Musikverein and marks its first appearance in France. It also continues the international journey of a production created in 2024 to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Tamerlano’s composition. In this sense, the Versailles performance is not only a musical event, but also a cultural gesture: a meeting between Handel’s European Baroque legacy and the contemporary artistic ambitions of Uzbekistan.
The Royal Opera of Versailles provides a particularly meaningful setting for such an encounter. Located within the Château de Versailles, the Opéra Royal remains one of the most emblematic theatres of the French classical world. Its architecture, intimacy and historical aura make it a place where music is never separated from memory. To hear Handel there is to experience a form of continuity between courtly splendour, theatrical refinement and the living energy of performance.

It is important to note that this concert is not part of the Royal Opera’s official musical season. It is presented independently, at the initiative of the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation @acdfuz, whose role has been central in bringing this tricentennial work into a renewed international light.
With Tamerlano, Handel created a drama in which every character confronts the consequences of power and choice. Three centuries later, the opera remains vivid because its questions have not disappeared. How does one remain human in the face of authority? What is the cost of pride? Can love survive political violence?
At Versailles, these questions will be carried by music, voices and the symbolic force of place. Between Baroque mastery and contemporary cultural exchange, Tamerlano promises an evening of intensity, elegance and reflection – a rare moment where history, opera and international artistic dialogue meet beneath the gilded light of Versailles.
