MATTHEW WILLIAMSON X FREE PEOPLE:

A SUMMER CAPSULE FOR THE CREATIVE SPIRIT

After seven years away from fashion, Matthew Williamson returns with a collection that feels less like a comeback and more like a sunlit rediscovery. Launching on 10 June 2026, the British designer unveils an exclusive 15-piece Summer capsule for Free People, a collaboration rooted in colour, craftsmanship, travel and the unmistakable romance of modern bohemia.

For a generation who remembers Williamson’s vibrant prints, expressive femininity and free-spirited silhouettes, this capsule rekindles a very particular fashion emotion. His work has always belonged to women who dress with imagination, confidence and instinct. With Free People, that world finds a natural new home. The brand’s relaxed, creative energy meets Williamson’s rich visual language in a collection designed for movement, escape and personal expression.

Inspired by a season spent travelling through Europe, the capsule is deeply connected to Mallorca, where Matthew now lives and recently opened his lifestyle store, CASERRA 71. The campaign, shot throughout Deià by photographer and Hotel Corazón founder Kate Bellm, captures the island’s artistic soul: golden light, sun-drenched textures, Balearic freedom and the quiet luxury of summer days lived slowly.

The result is a wardrobe that feels both nostalgic and current. Williamson’s signature use of colour and print has been reimagined through the natural palette of Mallorca, from warm coastal tones to vibrant botanical references. Celestial motifs, hand-painted designs and artisanal details appear throughout the collection, giving each piece a sense of craft and escapism.

Among the standout pieces is the Palma Printed Maxi Dress, inspired by a silhouette from Matthew’s Spring 2011 archive and reworked with tropical palms. It captures the spirit of the collaboration perfectly: feminine, effortless and made for summer travel. The Retro Sunbeam towelling set, presented in a deep vibrant red, brings a playful yet refined resort energy, while the full-length Deià Embroidered Coat draws inspiration from the creative world of Hotel Corazón.

The Sol Embellished Mini introduces intricate detailing and a more evening-focused mood, while the swimwear and accessories extend the collection’s bohemian universe. A hand-crafted crochet bikini, bold floral swimsuit, richly patterned scarves and an oversized beach tote complete a holiday wardrobe designed to move easily from the beach to dinner, from market mornings to warm Mediterranean nights.

“It’s been a while since I’ve stepped back into the fashion world, so collaborating with Free People felt incredibly exciting,” says Matthew Williamson. “I’ve long admired their aesthetic and together we’ve created a capsule wardrobe that reflects both of our brand DNAs — rooted in colour, print, craftsmanship and a shared spirit of escapism.”

That sense of shared identity is central to the collaboration. Free People has always spoken to women who dress emotionally, creatively and independently. Williamson’s return through this partnership feels organic because both worlds celebrate freedom, individuality and a slightly dreamlike approach to style. The clothes are not built around trends, but around feeling: the desire to travel, to layer, to collect memories, to dress with personality.

“The bohemian spirit I’ve always loved remains, but reimagined through a more modern, folkloric lens,” Williamson continues. “I wanted the pieces to feel effortless yet impactful — a versatile European Summer wardrobe designed to be worn season after season.”

For Leighanne Jones, Senior Creative Director at Free People, the connection was immediate. “Matthew’s world has long felt deeply aligned with the creative spirit of Free People — from his bold use of colour and print to the creativity, artistry and craft surrounding his life and work,” she says. “There’s a shared sense of freedom and expression that made the collaboration feel incredibly natural from the beginning.”

The collection also opens a dialogue between past and present. For those who grew up with Matthew Williamson’s iconic pieces, it brings back the transformative joy of fashion. For a new generation, it introduces his universe through a fresh lens: lighter, more relaxed, yet still full of colour, emotion and visual impact.

This is not a loud return. It is a confident one. Williamson comes back to fashion not by repeating the past, but by translating his signature world into a contemporary summer language. The silhouettes are fluid, the textures soft, the details elevated. Everything feels made for women who want clothes that carry a story without feeling overworked.

The Matthew Williamson x Free People capsule will be available globally at freepeople.com and in selected Free People London stores, including Duke of York Square, Richmond, Westbourne Grove and Hampstead. It will also launch through a dedicated pop-up at CASERRA 71 in Mallorca, Matthew’s newly opened lifestyle store, where it will be presented alongside an edit of Free People’s Free-est range.

More than a capsule collection, this collaboration feels like a meeting of kindred spirits. Between Mallorca and London, nostalgia and modernity, craftsmanship and ease, Matthew Williamson and Free People offer a summer wardrobe for women who dress not only for where they are going, but for who they are becoming.
